Anatomy of a Bleeding Heart

People often refer to liberals with two adjectives:  Bleeding Hearts.  The connotation is that liberals have sympathy for everyone, we are pushovers, we’ll absolutely take your hard-earned money and give it to the homeless guy who does nothing all day.

Not really.

We aren’t pushovers about several things and regularly draw clear, concise boundary lines where we must:  that means NO religion gets any sort of preference in the public sphere, such a practice is called a theocracy and the United States is a democracy.  Religion stays out of the picture. Period.  No discussion, no argument. No Bleeding Heart softness on this issue.

Since we live in a democracy we ‘Bleeding Hearts”  are adamant about equal rights and will stand staunchly to keep them accessible to all of our citizens. That means no couple is more ‘worthy’ to get married than another.  That means everyone gets the opportunity to vote without having to jump through hoops. That means we all have equal access to enough resources to allow us to live: education, healthcare, police protection, a roof over our heads, you know – human needs.  If we see an injustice somewhere, if we notice one group getting isn’t getting enough food, protection, education etc., then our “Bleeding Hearts” will become fierce proponents of their plight until their needs are met.  Fierce.

Having a “Bleeding Heart” also mean employing a certain amount of grace, diplomacy.   It means talking and compromising with other countries with a clear view to a worldwide status, not just a United States status.   It means being aware that our way of living is not sustainable, and working vigorously for change.  It means understanding that we share this planet with the rest of the world and we are not somehow more entitled to its resources than any other society.

Sympathy? Yes possessing a “Bleeding Heart” does require sympathy, an emotion that separates us from other animals.  We will, with firm resolution, pity the homeless.  Aware that roughly half of them are either veterans or mentally ill, they require help, not blame and victimization.  We understand that it’s quite possible that the chick with three kids in front of us, paying with an EBT card, also works a full-time job but still can’t make ends meet, more deserving of our respect than our judgment.

If one were to dissect a “Liberal Bleeding Heart”, the myth of finding a soft, gushy blob of sympathy would be busted. Instead, one finds hard, stiff lines keeping personal and public space delineated.  One finds a sharp nose for injustice and swift action for its amelioration.  One finds the discipline to look at long-term effects and worldwide consequences instead of short-term goals and an “U.S.” only mentality, and the absolute will to enforce change. One finds the belief that we are all in this together, we are all brothers and sisters, and by god we should act like it.  Such is the anatomy of a Bleeding Heart Liberal.  #VOTE2016
