The Guardian published this story on Friday: EU Dropped Pesticide Laws Due to Us Pressure Over TTIP, Documents Reveal, it discusses the unprecedented reach of the oligarchy in making this deal happen. (The thought that they are reaching out so thoroughly to ensure the TPP’s passage should give us an idea of how much the oligarchy stands to gain from its implementation.)
Europe typically excels when it comes to banning chemicals that are proven to be harmful to the general population (which is why some foods such as Doritos taste differently ‘across the pond’). There
is was legislation up for passage that would ban over thirty pesticides containing EDC’s (endocrine disrupting chemicals) from use in the union. Studies have shown that EDC’s are associated with “a rise in foetal abnormalities, genital mutations, infertility, and adverse health effects ranging from cancer to IQ loss.” However, it’s been discovered from meeting minutes that EU officials have been subject to intense pressure from the lobby group the American Chamber of Commerce to reconsider enforcing EDC regulations because of the harm it poses to the TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership).
“On the morning of 2 July 2013, a high-level delegation from the US Mission toEurope and the American Chambers of Commerce (AmCham) visited EU trade officials to insist that the bloc drop its planned criteria for identifying EDCs in favour of a new impact study. By the end of the day, the EU had done so.”
The “in favor of a new study” is a two-pronged element: it kicks the passage of any regulations down the road so that the TPP can be implemented first and it changes the focus of the discussion from health and safety issues to economic and profit issues. The following quotes are telling and reveal the concern the oligarchy has over any regulations that might hinder their markets and trade deals – health of the consumers be damned:
- ‘AmCham representatives “complained about the uselessness of creating categories and thus, lists” of prohibited substances, the minutes show.’
- ‘AmCham had warned the EU of “wide-reaching implications” if the draft criteria were approved. The trade body wanted an EU impact study to set looser thresholds for acceptable exposure to endocrines, based on a substance’s potency.’
- ‘In a high-level internal note sent to the health commissioner, Tonio Borg, shortly afterwards, his departmental director-general warned that the EU’s endocrines policy “will have substantial impacts for the economy, agriculture and trade”.’
The Trans Pacific Partnership is a potential gold mine for the oligarchy and profiteers. It is a failure on many levels for world consumers and laborers. The oligarchy is certainly doing its best to make sure its interests are obliged, as consumers and laborers we are not meeting their efforts to ensure our interests are obliged. It is imperative to write your congress and exhort them to vote against its passage. You can reach the Senate here, the House of Representatives here.
